Kenya Roberson: Revolutionizing Fashion Wholesale with Sustainability at Elite Garment Distro

Kenya Roberson, founder of Elite Garment Distro, is transforming the wholesale fashion industry by merging creativity, sustainability, and social impact. From building trust with new clients to sourcing eco-friendly materials, her journey is a testament to the power of purpose-driven business. We sat down for a conversation and discussed a lot of things about the fashion and garments industry. Discover how she’s redefining fashion wholesale for a better future.

Q: Kenya, can you share your personal journey and what inspired you to start Elite Garment Distro?

Kenya Roberson: The inspiration to start Elite Garment Distro came from witnessing a wholesale world that lacked purpose, creativity, and fashion. With my background in fashion, I began working for a wholesale company and quickly realized that liquidation didn’t have to be limited to just Costco, Target, or Amazon products—it could also include higher-end brands. Throughout this journey, I discovered that I could not only provide fashion apparel to underprivileged markets but also boost local economies and help communities in need. This dual-purpose approach became the foundation of Elite Garment Distro.

Q: What challenges did you face when starting Elite Garment Distro, and how did your background help you overcome them?

Kenya Roberson: In the early stages, one of the biggest challenges was building a reputation and getting new clients to trust my products. Many buyers are understandably hesitant when purchasing from a new supplier, so it took a great deal of hard work and persistence. Constant follow-ups and a commitment to quality helped me build the customer base that Elite Garment Distro has today. My background in fashion played a crucial role in this process, providing me with the knowledge and skills to navigate these challenges.

Q: How does your personal commitment to sustainability influence the practices and goals of Elite Garment Distro?

Kenya Roberson: Sustainability is at the core of Elite Garment Distro’s mission. We target some of the highest-producing fast fashion companies as our main suppliers because these companies generate the most waste. By partnering with them, we can solve two problems simultaneously: providing affordable clothing to communities in need and preventing millions of garments from ending up in oceans and landfills every year. This approach allows us to make a positive impact on both people and the planet.

Q: What specific experiences or events motivated you to focus on eco-friendly materials and technologies in your company?

Kenya Roberson: My travels to Portugal were a turning point for me. During my visits, I witnessed firsthand how some factories were not using sustainable practices when discarding excess apparel. It became clear to me that there was a need for a buyer who could purchase this excess and create second and third lives for these garments, ensuring that they would decompose naturally later in their lifecycle. This experience solidified my commitment to eco-friendly materials and technologies in Elite Garment Distro.

Q: Can you describe how Elite Garment Distro’s approach to sustainable fashion sets it apart from other companies in the industry?

Kenya Roberson: Many companies in the wholesale industry are purely profit-driven, seeking the best deals and highest margins without considering the long-term impact of their actions. In contrast, Elite Garment Distro takes a holistic approach. We don’t just focus on profit; we also consider the long-term solutions for the garments we distribute and how our buyers in other countries can benefit from them. This commitment to sustainability and community impact truly sets us apart in the industry.

Q: Looking back at your journey, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who want to merge their passion for fashion with a commitment to sustainability?

Kenya Roberson: My advice to young entrepreneurs is to always consider the best solution for both the planet and the company. You can’t focus solely on one or the other doing so will either cause the company to fail or leave it without a mission. By balancing your passion for fashion with a strong commitment to sustainability, you can create a business that not only thrives but also makes a meaningful difference in the world.
