From Zero to Hero: The Inspirational Journey of Dr. Sanjeev Varghese – A Fashion Icon and Goodwill Ambassador

In a world where perseverance often goes unnoticed and dreams are frequently delayed, Dr. Sanjeev Varghese, fondly known as Sanju Baba, is a living testament to the power of faith, resilience, and purpose. A public figure, multicultural promoter, goodwill ambassador, influencer, beauty pageant jury member, and charity volunteer, his story is one of triumph over adversity, breaking cultural boundaries, and inspiring communities across the United Kingdom and beyond.

Born into a Syrian-Orthodox Christian family in India, Sanjeev moved to the UK to work in the health sector. Although fashion was discouraged in his religious upbringing, his passion for style never waned. Financial constraints meant that a formal education in fashion remained a distant dream. However, life in Manchester opened a new window of inspiration. Living in a predominantly Black community, he was captivated by the elegance and pride with which African residents dressed for church. Their vibrant style stirred something deep within him — and Sanjeev began crafting his unique fashion identity.

Yet, his journey was far from easy. In 2014, a series of personal and professional setbacks brought him to his lowest point — losing his job due to workplace discrimination and enduring a painful separation. With little support, he found himself battling depression and suicidal thoughts. But rather than succumb to darkness, Sanjeev chose hope. Inspired by his mother and a close friend, John Cotterill, he decided to transform pain into purpose. Rejecting vices, he turned to fashion and community service, becoming a model, volunteer, and voice for multicultural unity.

Sanjeev’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2016, he made history as the first Indian male to receive a Fashion Icon award from the Pakistani Community Centre in Manchester. It was the beginning of a meteoric rise. From the BEFFTA Awards in London to the Oracle Inspirational Personality Award, from accolades in Scotland to recognition in the Philippines and Nigeria, Sanjeev’s name has become synonymous with cultural harmony, style, and compassion. Notably, he was honored with the Mahatma Gandhi Nobel Peace Award and an Honorary Doctorate for social work.

His influence has graced international platforms. He was a guest of honor and judge for various beauty pageants, featured on magazine covers in the UK and Europe, and lauded by none other than Julia Morley, CEO of Miss World, who spotlighted him on the big screen at the 2019 pageant.

What sets Dr. Sanjeev Varghese apart is his fearless defiance of societal norms. In a culture where male fashion often takes a backseat, he emerged as a pioneer, changing perceptions and inspiring countless men to embrace their individuality. His fashion journey became more than style — it became a symbol of empowerment and representation for the unheard.

Today, Sanjeev continues to serve as a multicultural ambassador, using fashion and media as platforms for inclusivity, charity, and unity. His dedication to voluntary work and charitable causes, including domestic abuse, autism awareness, and refugee support, exemplifies his belief that one can be stylish and serve at the same time.

“I want the world to know,” says Sanjeev, “that if you are honest and trust your Creator, He will never let you down. Anyone can rise — at any age, in any situation — with faith and determination.”

From anonymity to acclaim, Sanjeev Varghese’s journey from “Zero to Hero” is a beacon of hope for dreamers everywhere. His legacy isn’t just the awards he’s won, but the hearts he’s touched and the societal norms he’s courageously redefined.
