“Parasite” Makes History at 2020 SAG Awards
The 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on January 19, 2020 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The big winner of the night was the South Korean film “Parasite”, which took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. This marked the first time a foreign language film has won the SAG Award’s top prize.”I’m so honored to receive this award in front of such amazing actors that I admire,” said “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho as the cast accepted the award. “I will never forget this beautiful night.”The historic win for “Parasite” comes on the heels of its success at the Golden Globes, where it won Best Foreign Language Film. The dark comedy about class struggle has been building momentum throughout awards season and the SAG Award win further solidifies it as a frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar.
Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger Win Top Acting Honors
In the individual acting categories, Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger took home the top prizes for their lead roles. Phoenix won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his chilling performance in “Joker”.”I’m standing here on the shoulders of my favorite actor, Heath Ledger,” Phoenix said in his acceptance speech, paying tribute to the late actor who won an Oscar for playing the Joker in 2008’s “The Dark Knight”.Zellweger won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Judy Garland in “Judy”. This was Zellweger’s first SAG Award win.
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston Win Supporting Honors
In the supporting categories, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were the winners. Pitt took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”.Aniston won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role in “The Morning Show”. This was Aniston’s first individual SAG Award win since 1996.The 2020 SAG Awards were a night of historic wins and emotional tributes. “Parasite” made Oscars history, while Phoenix, Zellweger, Pitt and Aniston were recognized for their acclaimed performances. The show highlighted the incredible talent in film and television this past year.
